Rivers State REC urges youth to stay away from violence during election

Currently Rivers state has turned into a battle field were different thugs now exhibit their strengths and characteristics, all in the name of supporting various political parties. Ahead of the forthcoming elections in Rivers state on Saturday, March 19, the state government has declared public holidays starting from the 17th of March.

The resident electoral commissioner for the state, Aniedi Ikoiwak has persuaded the people of Rives state to maintain peace during the elections, as there are already speculations of armed youths ready to display

Ikoiwak in an interview with Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday, March 16, also mentioned the sensitive materials would arrive the state on Wednesday, March 16th 2016. On what should be expected from the forthcoming elections in Rivers state on Saturday, March 19. Ikoiwak said: 

“Some aspects of the elections have been concluded as we are working on a timeline. By today, most of us are expecting the sensitive material which means we have deployed our non-sensitive materials to the local governments, we have concluded training of SPOs and today, we will conclude training of Presiding Officers while the training of Collation Officers and Returning Officers would be done tomorrow”.

On the present security situation in the state presently, he said: “We are appealing to people and we are also talking to security agencies – interrogative committees to deal with the security situation. Ours is to appeal to the security agents to save lives and property of the people”. In a related development, a major of the Nigerian Army and three other soldiers have reportedly been shot dead on Thursday, March 17, in Abonnema in Akuku-Toru local government area of Rivers state.
