Mass defection of PDP members to APC in Benue state

Up to 5,000 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have abandoned the party and defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), in Benue state saying they cannot belong to opposition politics. According to Leadership, the defectors included PDP in the MINDA extraction of the Benue North-west senatorial district. 

The PDP members burnt their membership cards and held the broom to mark their decamping to APC. Several political units including political clubs and associations in MINDA as well traditional groups were led into the APC fold at the JS Tarka foundation in Makurdi. A unit leader of the defectors from Sherev in Guma LGA, Mike Adyo, said they cannot risk the folly of belonging to the opposition to antagonize the administration of Governor Ortom hence he an indigene of the council area. He said they are behind the governor to enhance development.

The state chairman of APC Abba Yaro, said the defection was a clear manifestation that PDP has finally collapsed and lost its relevance to oppose APC, adding that the party was not out to witch-hunt but to bring all people together. In a related development, there was massive defection of PDP supporters to APC on Thursday, March 31, at Afo in Ose local government area of Ondo state. 

The defectors were led by Chief R.B Animola, a community leader in an event witnessed by party supporters. Oni Olowo, the Asiwaju of Afo community attributed the success to grassroot mobilization and sensitization of the people.
