Baby of 18 months old rescued alive from crumbled building after 4 days

A toddler was rescued alive from the rubble of a six-storey building four days after it collapsed. The baby was said to be 18 months old.

Daily Mail reports that at least 23 people have been confirmed dead after residential block crumbled on Friday, April 29, in Nairobi, Kenya.

However, the baby girl was found without any visible injuries, reportedly having been wrapped up and put in a bucket.

“A child aged about one and half years rescued alive at 4am and referred to Kenyatta National Hospital,” Kenya Red Cross said on Tuesday, May 3.

The Red Cross said the little girl had been there for 80 hours since the building, which was home to 150 families, collapsed last week.

Speaking about the accident, the Nairobi police chief, Japheth Koome, called it a ‘miracle’ and said the emergency services were continuing their rescue efforts.

He said that the death toll from the tragedy rose to 23 on Tuesday after two more bodies were found by the rescuers.

The building located in Huruma neighbourhood had been slated for demolition after being declared structurally unsound.

However, an evacuation order for the structure, which was built near a river just two years ago, was ignored.

Five people are to appear in court on Tuesday to face manslaughter charges over the incident.
