Custom Officers and smugglers get into war in Ogun state leaving 6 people dead

Reports confirmed the death of four persons yesterday evening, May 1 when officials of the Nigeria Customs Service, (NCS) and some people believed to be smugglers had a face off  at Oke odan town in Yewa south local government area of Ogun state.


The deceased were said to have been hit by stray bullets during the challenge. 

The Customs officials were said to be after some suspected rice smugglers, who were coming in long convoy from Igolo, a border community in neighbouring Benin Republic and heading towards Sango in Ado odo/Ota local government area of Ogun state. 

It was also said that all those killed are not smugglers, but innocent people, carrying out their legitimate duties. 

Our correspondent reliably gathered from some eyewitnesses said among those killed were three young children, a motor mechanic, panel-beater and a secondary school leaver, who was simply identified as Ade. 

It was further gathered that all the deceased were in there various shops and homes, when the bullets hit them and they died immediately. 

The entire road was completely closed down for road users as people were said to be scampering around for the safety of their lives. 

The royal father of the area, Oba Olurotimi Oluremi Fagbenro, the Oloke Odan of Oke Odan was said to have intervened but the Customs men were alleged to have ignored him. 

The lawmaker representing the area (Yewa South/Ipokia federal constituency), Hon. AbdulKabir Adekunle Akinlade expressed displeasure over the incident, which he described as unfortunate and unacceptable.

He disclosed that talks is ongoing with the leadership of the Nigeria Customs Service, (NCS) on the matter. 

Tripple A, as fondly called by his people however commiserated with the families of the deceased over the sudden death of their loved ones. 

“The shooting of innocent bystanders is unfortunate and unacceptable.  In light of this development. 

“I have opened talks with the leadership of the security agency involved in this incident. I wish to plead with our people to remain calm and go about their legitimate business while assuring them that we (myself & Ogun State government) will work restlessly to finding a lasting solution to this recurring confrontations. 

“My heartfelt condolences to the families of the dead”, the lawmaker said.
